Madras cloth comes from Chennai (formerly Madras) and has been woven there since the 17th century. British traders took it back to Europe and it became a global icon — prep schools, summer clubs, beach resorts. But it never left its roots. The check pattern is woven directly into the fabric using yarn-dyed threads, not printed on top. The maroon and olive combination here is earthy and grounded — nothing loud, nothing try-hard.

Madras is tightly woven, which is why it feels stiffer than your average cotton. That stiffness is structure — it holds its shape wash after wash, resists pilling, and doesn't go limp after a few wears. The check pattern, being woven in rather than printed, won't crack or fade at the creases. Over time it does soften, and when it does, it's earned.

Maroon and olive is an underrated combination — warm, rich, works across seasons. Roll the sleeves to three-quarter length like the photo and it immediately looks relaxed and intentional. Wear it with dark denim or olive trousers. Avoid busy bottoms — the check is doing the work, keep everything else clean.

This one needs a little more patience early on. Hand wash cold for the first few washes — it helps the fabric relax and soften without losing its structure. Avoid the machine until it's broken in. Air dry flat or on a hanger. Iron on medium-high heat while slightly damp — this fabric responds well to a firm press and will look noticeably sharper for it.
