Madras cloth has been woven in Chennai since the 17th century — it traveled the world on trading ships and became a wardrobe staple from Tokyo to New York. But it never stopped being Indian. The check here is woven in, not printed — rust and amber threads interlocked at the loom, creating a pattern that lives in the structure of the fabric itself. Warm, earthy, and completely original.

Madras is a tight, dense weave — built to hold its shape and resist wear. The rust and amber colours come from yarn-dyed threads, so they won't crack at the folds or fade unevenly the way surface prints do. The stiffness you feel when you first wear it is the fabric at full strength. It relaxes with time, but never loses its backbone.

Rust and amber is one of the most flattering colour combinations on Indian skin tones — warm, rich, effortless. The photo says it all — cream or off-white trousers are the perfect match. Also works with dark khaki or stone. Keep accessories minimal. This shirt already looks like a statement; it doesn't need help.

This fabric is stiff by nature — give it time to break in properly. Hand wash cold for the first few washes to help it soften without shrinking. Avoid the machine early on. Air dry on a hanger. Iron on medium-high heat while slightly damp — Madras responds well to a firm press and will look noticeably crisper for it. It softens with every wash; the more you wear it, the better it gets.
